Jan Smuts

Jan Smuts (seated, centre) after a
successful raid into the Cape. He excelled at hit-and-run
warfare, he led a raid into the Cape that was to prove one of
the most influential military adventures of the 20th Century and
had a direct influence on the creation of the British Commandos
and all the other special forces which followed. With these
practical developments came the development of the military
doctrines of deep penetration raids and asymmetric warfare.
